Red, White, and Gadsby’s: A GW Parade Day to Remember

Old Town was full of energy on February 14 as Alexandria celebrated its annual George Washington Birthday Parade and Gadsby’s Tavern Museum Society showed up in style.

More than 20 marchers joined the procession, bringing history to life for the crowds lining the streets. At the center of it all was John Gadsby himself (portrayed by Ted Borek), riding proudly in Cathy Van Way’s (GTMS Treasurer) bright red BMW convertible—a modern twist that turned plenty of heads and smiles.

The Society’s strong showing earned 2nd place in the Historical Unit category, a well-deserved recognition of the group’s dedication to keeping Alexandria’s past present and engaging.

A special thank you goes to Kristen Eastlick (GTMS board member), who sponsored the parade on behalf of the Society this year. Her support helped ensure Gadsby’s Tavern had a vibrant and visible presence in one of Alexandria’s most beloved traditions.

And the celebration doesn’t stop there. Congratulations are also in order for the New Republic fashionistas, who marched in grand style and took home an award of their own. Their flair and attention to detail added even more color and excitement to the day.

From historic characters to spirited community members, the parade was a reminder of what makes Alexandria special: a shared love of history, tradition, and coming together to celebrate both. The GTMS is proud contributor to this historic tradition and legacy.
